Rebecca F. Kuang is an American fantasy novelist, born on May 29, 1996. She is renowned for her critically acclaimed works, including the Poppy War trilogy, with the first novel released in 2018, followed by The Dragon Republic in 2019, and The Burning God in 2020. In 2022, she published a stand-alone novel titled Babel, or the Necessity of Violence, which debuted at the top of The New York Times Best Seller list and won the Blackwell's Book of the Year for Fiction along with the 2022 Nebula Award for Best Novel. Her latest release is Yellowface, a satirical novel published in 2023.
Kuang holds an undergraduate degree in international economics with a minor in Asian Studies from Georgetown University. She further pursued graduate studies in Sinology at Magdalene College, Cambridge, and University College, Oxford. Currently, she is undertaking a PhD at Yale University in East Asian Languages and Literatures, focusing on Sinophone and Asian American literature.
Throughout her career, Kuang has been the recipient of numerous accolades. Besides the aforementioned awards, she has won the Compton Crook Award, the Crawford Award, and the 2020 Astounding Award for Best New Writer. She has also been a finalist for the Nebula, Locus, World Fantasy, Kitschies, and British Fantasy awards for The Poppy War series. In recognition of her achievements, she has been named to the 2023 Time100 Next list and the Forbes 30 Under 30 Class of 2024.
