Un romanzo egocentrico, disordinato, eclettico, rabbioso. Rep è una specie di eroe perseguitato dal destino, in fuga dalla realtà immobile di Cartagena. Vuole cominciare una nuova vita, non importa quale, ma intanto vuole dimenticare la ragazza che lo ha lasciato (e qui si innesta l'evocazione della love story di una celebre coppia dell'olimpo del rock, Sid Vicious e Nancy).

Scappa per inconcludenti soggiorni nella metropoli (Bogotà), zigzagando fra le bombe degli attentati politici, le risse notturne, le sbornie e la noia. Come Kurt Cobain, Rep si sente intrappolato in qualcosa che ovviamente non è il successo che portò la rockstar alla morte ma che comunque ha a che fare con il vivere in prima linea, sempre a due passi dal vuoto, sempre a due passi dal senso di una vita deliberatamente caotica.

D'altro canto Rep ha una disperata vitalità che si esprime in performance erotiche, in passionali rapporti di amicizia, in maestosi accessi di ira e di gioia. Non c'è il buio in fondo alla sua strada ma un'ansia di liberazione che, beffardamente, si traduce anche in una sonora presa in giro del realismo magico sudamericano (le pene d'amore avrebbero a che fare con una carota surgelata carica di malefici...).

Cannibale, ma più autentico, vorticoso ma sapientemente strutturato, sboccato ma mai gratuito, questo romanzo è l'opera rock su una generazione che non si lascia etichettare.
