Yumi Hotta (堀田 由美, Hotta Yumi, most often written as ほった ゆみ), born October 15, 1957, is a renowned Japanese manga artist.
Hotta is celebrated for her creation of the best-selling manga and anime series Hikaru no Go. This series, centered on the game of go, is widely acknowledged for spurring the late 1990s to 2000s surge in popularity of the game in Japan. Hotta's inspiration for Hikaru no Go kindled when she engaged in an impromptu game of go with her father-in-law. Captivated by the idea of crafting a manga revolving around this classic board game, she embarked on the project initially titled Nine Stars (九つの星, Kokonotsu no Hoshi), a nod to the nine pivotal "star points" on a go board.
Further enriching her work, Hotta collaborated with Takeshi Obata for illustration and Yukari Umezawa (5-Dan) for supervision, culminating in the creation of Hikaru no Go. Her significant contributions were recognized when she received the coveted Shogakukan Manga Award in 2000 and the esteemed Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2003.
In addition to her most famous work, Hotta penned a short manga series titled Yūto (ユート) in 2005, which explores the world of long track speed skating and was featured in Weekly Shōnen Jump.
