Xuē Xīnrán, known by her pen name Xinran, is a British-Chinese journalist, author, speaker, and advocate for women's issues. She was born in Beijing in 1958.
Xinran gained popularity as a radio personality in China with her call-in program "Words on the Night Breeze" from 1989 to 1997. The program focused on women's issues and life stories. She was well-known for traveling extensively across China to interview women, which greatly informed her work.
In 1997, she moved to London and began writing stories about the women she encountered during her travels. Her first book, The Good Women of China, was published in 2002 and became an international bestseller. Xinran frequently contributes to The Guardian and the BBC.
