Sayaka Murata

Sayaka Murata is a prominent Japanese writer, born on August 14, 1979. She has been recognized for her unique literary voice, winning several prestigious awards such as the Gunzo Prize for New Writers, the Mishima Yukio Prize, the Noma Literary New Face Prize, and the esteemed Akutagawa Prize for her novel Convenience Store Woman in 2016.


Murata's literary career began in 2003 with her debut work Junyu (Breastfeeding), which earned her the Gunzo Prize. Her continued success includes the Gin iro no uta (Silver Song), which won the Noma Prize for New Writers in 2009, and Shiro-oro no machi no, sono hone no taion no (Of Bones, of Body Heat, of Whitening City), which won the Mishima Yukio Prize in 2013. Apart from her novels, she has also contributed short stories translated into English, such as "Lover on the Breeze."


Remarkably, Murata continues to work part-time in a convenience store, which serves as a source of inspiration for her writing. Her works offer a fresh perspective on everyday life and societal norms, often exploring themes of identity and belonging.
