Leah Cypess is an American author known for her work in the genres of fantasy and science fiction. She has been active in the field since 1995. Some of her early works were published under her maiden name, Leah Suslovich, and she also writes Judaica under the pen name Leah Sokol.
Cypess wrote her first story in first grade, with the narrator being an ice-cream cone in the process of being eaten. By fourth grade, she had completed her first book, inspired by The Black Stallion and the Lassie movies. She sold her first story, Temple of Stone, while in high school.
Following her mother's advice to pursue a practical career, Cypess majored in biology at Brooklyn College and later attended Columbia Law School. She practiced law for almost two years in New York City, continuing to write and submit stories in her spare time. After fifteen years from her first short story acceptance, she sold her first novel to Greenwillow Books.
