Laurie Penny (born Laura Barnett, 28 September 1986) is a British journalist and writer known for their work on feminism and social justice issues. They have written articles for a variety of publications including The Guardian, The Spectator, The New York Times, and Salon. Penny is a contributing editor at the New Statesman and the author of several influential books on feminism. In addition to their writing, they have contributed to American television shows such as The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Nevers.
Penny's major works include Cybersexism, Penny Red, Meat Market: Female Flesh Under Capitalism, and Discordia: Six Nights in Crisis Athens, the latter co-authored with Molly Crabapple. Their book Unspeakable Things was published by Bloomsbury in 2014. A recognized voice in political writing, Penny was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize in 2010 at the age of 23.
Aside from their written work, Penny frequently appears on national television and radio programs such as Question Time and Any Questions, where they discuss issues of social justice, pop culture, gender, and digital politics.
