Laia Jufresa is a celebrated Mexican writer renowned for her novel Umami, which has been translated into multiple languages. Jufresa was born in Mexico City and spent her formative years between Veracruz and Paris. She pursued a Bachelor of Arts at the Sorbonne and further honed her craft at the Dynamic School of Writers under Mario Bellatin and received grants from the Foundation for Mexican Literature and the Mexican National Fund for Culture and the Arts.
Jufresa's literary contributions extend beyond her debut novel; her short stories collection El esquinista received an honorable mention in the National Prize for Short Story San Luis PotosΓ 2012. Her works have been selected for numerous anthologies and have graced the pages of magazines and newspapers globally. In recognition of her talent, she was named one of the most promising young writers in Latin America in the Bogota39 list of 2017 and was also recognized by the Mexico20 project.
Her accolades include the best first novel in Spanish at the 2016 First Novel Festival in ChambΓ©ry, France, a PEN Translates Award, and she was a finalist for The Best Translated Book Award 2017. Jufresa's literary journey has also led her to be the first International Writer in Residence at the Hay Festival in Wales and an invitee to the Crossing Border Festival in The Hague.
Currently residing in Edinburgh, Scotland, Jufresa continues to influence the literary world as a writer and life coach for artists. She is editing her forthcoming novel, WISHBONE, and has recently ventured into non-fiction with her book Veinte, Veintiuno, which won acclaim and was published by Penguin Random House.
