John Connolly was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 31 May 1968. He is an acclaimed Irish author renowned for his gripping crime novels, particularly the series featuring the detective Charlie Parker. Throughout his life, Connolly has embraced a variety of roles, including journalist, barman, local government official, waiter, and a humble dogsbody at Harrods department store in London.
He pursued his academic studies in English at Trinity College, Dublin, followed by journalism at Dublin City University. Subsequently, he dedicated five years to working as a freelance journalist for The Irish Times newspaper, to which he continues contributing. Despite being based in Dublin, he frequently divides his time between his native city and the United States.
