Dean Burnett is a neuroscientist, psychiatry lecturer, and prolific author known for his engaging science communication and comedic flair. He is notably recognized for his satirical science column, Brain Flapping, at the Guardian, which ran from 2012 to 2018. Burnett's work extends beyond writing; he is an honorary research fellow at Cardiff Psychology School and a regular columnist for the BBC’s Science Focus magazine.
Born and raised in Pontycymer, South Wales, Dean Burnett developed a strong Welsh accent and a keen interest in performing. He completed his BSc in Neuroscience and later a PhD focusing on the hippocampus at Cardiff University. Despite facing some challenges in his academic career, Dean channeled his energies into writing, comedy, and science communication, leading to his successful debut book, The Idiot Brain, published in 2016.
