Hell

2002

by Lolita Pille

Hell is the story of Ella, who prefers to be called Hell, a young woman entangled in the extravagant lifestyle of the rich and disenchanted. "I am a bitch," she declares, as she immerses herself into the superficial world where appearance is god, and consumerism is the creed.

Living in the affluent neighborhoods of Paris, Hell indulges in Prada shoes, cocaine, and exclusive clubs like the Cabaret and the Queen. Despite her privileged life, she finds herself "bored" and without desire, echoing the emptiness of her equally affluent friends.

Her world takes a turn when she meets a young man who is not like the others. He consoles her with "nihilistic speeches" and a touch of "incomparable perversity", introducing her to the complexities of love, which she describes as another form of hell.

Lolita Pille, at just 19, captures the rage and rebellion of youth, while weaving in literary references from Belle du Seigneur to Le Bleu du Ciel. Her debut novel is a raw exploration of a decadent lifestyle and the pursuit of meaning amidst chaos.
