Yanis Varoufakis

Yanis Varoufakis is a notable Greek-Australian economist and politician. He is the Secretary-General of the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25), a left-wing pan-European political party he co-founded in 2016. Varoufakis gained prominence as Greece's Minister of Finance between January and July 2015, where he negotiated on behalf of the Greek government during the Greek government-debt crisis.

He was first elected as a Member of the Hellenic Parliament with Syriza, representing the Athens B constituency in 2015, and later as a MeRA25 Member of Parliament representing Thessaloniki A from 2019 to 2023. Besides his political career, he is an active blogger, writer, and a former academic, having taught economic theory at the University of Athens and currently at the University of Texas at Austin.

Varoufakis is also known for his collaboration with Bernie Sanders in founding the Progressive International, an organization aimed at uniting progressive leftist forces worldwide. His background includes work as an economist at Valve Corporation, a video game company.
