Valter Hugo Mãe is the pen name of the Portuguese writer Valter Hugo Lemos. He is not only a writer but also an editor, singer, and plastic artist. Born in Saurimo, Angola, he spent his childhood in Paços de Ferreira and currently resides in Vila do Conde.
Valter Hugo Mãe is celebrated for his novel O remorso de Baltazar Serapião, which won the prestigious José Saramago Prize in Literature in 2007. His literary contributions have also been recognized with the Grande Prémio Portugal Telecom de Literatura in 2012, among others.
He holds a degree in Law and a postgraduate degree in Modern and Contemporary Portuguese Literature. Valter Hugo Mãe has authored several poetry books, including Livro de Maldições (2006), O Resto da Minha Alegria Seguido de a Remoção das Almas e Útero (2003), A Cobrição das Filhas (2001), Estou Escondido na Cor Amarga do Fim da Tarde e Três Minutos Antes de a Maré Encher (2000), and Egon Shiele Auto-Retrato de Dupla Encarnação, which received the Prémio de Poesia Almeida Garrett.
