Truddi Chase was an American author best known for her autobiography, When Rabbit Howls (1987), which detailed her experiences after being diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. The book provides an intense and personal account of her life, particularly her childhood with a sexually psychotic stepfather and the subsequent mental and physical cruelty she endured.
In the early 1980s, Chase began therapy to address feelings of extreme fear and distress. During her sessions with Dr. Robert Phillips, she revealed herself to be not one woman, but nearly a hundred different personalities, collectively known as "The Troops." These personalities, consisting of men, women, and children, interacted with the world through a front they called "the woman."
