Tadeusz Borowski

Tadeusz Borowski (12 November 1922 – 3 July 1951) was a Polish writer and journalist. His wartime poetry and stories, dealing with his experiences as a prisoner at Auschwitz, are recognized as classics of Polish literature. Borowski was born in Zhytomyr, in what is now Ukraine, and died by suicide in Warsaw.

He studied Polish literature at the underground Warsaw University and was actively involved in the underground cultural life during the war. In 1943, he was arrested and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp, and later transferred to places including Dachau. In 1946, he returned to Poland. After 1948, he became a supporter of the communist party and aligned his work with the principles of socialist realism.

He debuted in 1942 with a cycle of poems titled Gdziekolwiek ziemia. In 1948, he published two collections of stories—Pożegnanie z Marią and Kamienny świat—which received widespread acclaim.
