Susan Campbell Bartoletti is an American writer of children's literature whose notable works include Kids on Strike! and Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow.
She was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and later moved to a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. Bartoletti graduated from Marywood University in 1979 and from the University of Scranton in 1982. She began her career as an eighth-grade English teacher, where she was inspired by her students to pursue writing. Her career in writing started with the sale of her first short story in 1989, followed by the publication of her first picture book, Silver at Night, in 1992. By 1997, she dedicated herself to writing full-time.
Bartoletti's works have garnered numerous awards, including the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award for Nonfiction, the SCBWI Golden Kite Award for Nonfiction, the Jane Addams Children's Book Award, and a Newbery Honor in 2006. She also contributes to academia by teaching writing in MA and MFA programs at institutions like Spalding University and Hollins University, and she conducts workshops through the Highlights Foundation. Bartoletti currently resides with her family in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
