Silas House

Silas Dwane House (born August 7, 1971) is an American writer best known for his novels. He is also recognized as a music journalist, environmental activist, and columnist. House's fiction stands out for its attention to the natural world, working-class characters, and the challenges faced by rural areas and their inhabitants.

Furthermore, Silas House is a prominent representative for LGBTQ Appalachians and Southerners, making him one of the most visible LGBTQ figures associated with rural America. His novels include Clay's Quilt (2001), A Parchment of Leaves (2003), The Coal Tattoo (2005), Eli the Good (2009), and Southernmost (2018). He also co-authored Same Sun Here (2012) with Neela Vaswani and Something's Rising with Jason Howard (2009).

House's writings frequently appear in nationally recognized publications such as The Atlantic, The New York Times, and Salon. He has served as a commentator for NPR's "All Things Considered" and his work has been featured in Time, Ecotone, Oxford American, and Garden and Gun, among others.

Additionally, House is part of the fiction faculty at the Spalding School of Writing and holds the position of National Endowment for the Humanities Chair at Berea College.
