Richard Bachman is a pen name and fictional character created by American horror fiction author Stephen King, first adopted in 1977 for the novel Rage. King maintained the anonymity of the Bachman persona until its revelation in 1985. He compiled the initial four Bachman novels into The Bachman Books. The novel Rage became controversial due to its school shooting theme and was allowed to go out of print following the 1997 Heath High School shooting. Three additional novels were published under the Bachman moniker.
King also portrayed an unrelated character named Richard Bachman in the third season of the FX television series Sons of Anarchy (2010).
