Sir Philip Nicholas Outram Pullman, CBE, FRSL, is an acclaimed English writer born in Norwich. He is renowned for his best-selling works, most notably the His Dark Materials trilogy and The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ, a fictional biography of Jesus.
The first book of His Dark Materials, Northern Lights, won the 1995 Carnegie Medal as the year's outstanding English-language children's book. It was filmed as The Golden Compass. The trilogy ranked third in the BBC's The Big Read in 2003. Pullman was knighted in 2019 for his services to literature.
In 2008, The Times listed him among the "50 greatest British writers since 1945", and in a 2004 BBC poll, he was named the eleventh most influential person in British culture.
