Peter Albert David Singer is a renowned Australian moral philosopher, born on 6 July 1946. He is particularly known for his work as the Emeritus Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University. Specializing in applied ethics, he approaches ethical issues from a secular, utilitarian perspective.
He gained significant attention for his book Animal Liberation (1975), where he argues in favor of veganism, along with his essay "Famine, Affluence, and Morality", advocating for donations to aid the global poor.
Singer coauthored The Point of View of the Universe in 2014, revealing his evolution to a hedonistic utilitarian stance. He played a pivotal role at Monash University, establishing the Centre for Human Bioethics and serving twice as the chair of the philosophy department. His political involvement included an unsuccessful bid as a Greens candidate for the Australian Senate in 1996.
Acknowledged for his influence, Singer was named the Australian Humanist of the Year in 2004 and listed among Australia's top ten public intellectuals by The Sydney Morning Herald in 2005. He is a cofounder of Animals Australia and the founder of The Life You Can Save, a nonprofit organization.
