As a child, Peter was extremely shy, spending his time indulging in two primary hobbies: studying people and reading. He found both pursuits equally fascinating. Among his favorite characters were Encyclopedia Brown, Sebastian the Super Sleuth, and Sherlock Holmes. His passion for mystery stories led him to read Murder on the Orient Express, though he found the name "Hercule Poirot" unappealing, and thus did not pursue further stories in that series.
