Paul Roche

Donald Robert Paul Roche (26 September 1916 – 30 October 2007) was a British poet, novelist, and professor of English. He achieved critical acclaim as a translator of Greek and Latin classics, notably the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Sappho, and Plautus.

Born in Mussoorie, India, Roche, pronounced "rawsh," was closely associated with the Bloomsbury group, especially painter Duncan Grant. He met Grant in the summer of 1946, and Grant lived with Roche and his family until his death in 1978.

Roche's translation of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex was adapted into a screenplay for the 1967 film version featuring Christopher Plummer in the title role. Roche also participated in the film by playing a small role in the Greek chorus.
