Norton Philip Juster was an American academic, architect, and writer. He was best known as an author of children's books, notably for The Phantom Tollbooth and The Dot and the Line. Not only did Juster write these acclaimed children's stories, he was also an architect and planner, professor emeritus of design at Hampshire College.
His book The Dot and the Line was made into an Academy Award-winning animated film. Juster's work reached into the realm of opera, as he collaborated with Sheldon Harnick on the libretto for an opera based on The Phantom Tollbooth. The musical adaptation, with a score by Arnold Black, premiered in 1995.
Known for his culinary passion, Juster was an amateur cook and a professional eater. He resided with his wife in Amherst, Massachusetts, embracing the joy of life and literature until his passing in 2021.
