Mike Mullin is a young adult fiction writer known for his debut novel, Ashfall, which was named one of the top five young adult novels of 2011 by National Public Radio, a Best Teen Book of 2011 by Kirkus Reviews, and a New Voices selection by the American Booksellers Association. Mike first discovered his knack for writing in sixth grade when his teacher paid him for using unusual words. His entrepreneurial spirit and passion for literature led him to various jobs, including shelving books at Central Library in Indianapolis and working at his mother's business, Kids Ink Children's Bookstore.
Before finding success as an author, Mike's career trajectory included some memorable stints. His first job involved the unenviable task of scraping gum from under desks at his high school, and subsequent jobs ranged from potentially being fired for his taste in earrings to juggling bottles at a wine shop. He even braved eating live termites and dodged swarms of wasps. Through these diverse experiences, it's clear that Mike has always hoped for a successful writing career.
Apart from writing, Mike holds a black belt in Songahm Taekwondo. His educational background is impressive, with a degree in Political Science and minors in Latin American Studies and Economics, and an MBA from Indiana University. His professional journey has taken him from serving as a reference assistant at IU's library to brand management and marketing for well-known companies such as Procter & Gamble and Spectrum Brands. In between, he continued his association with Kids Ink and even launched his own remodeling company.
Despite the early comic endeavors of Captain Poopy's Sewer Adventures, written in elementary school, Mike's dedication to writing has culminated in the critically acclaimed Ashfall series. He currently resides in Indianapolis with his wife and her three cats and is represented by Kate Testerman of kt literary.
