Michael Anthony Dorris (January 30, 1945 β April 10, 1997) was an American novelist and scholar. He was notably the first Chair of the Native American Studies program at Dartmouth College. Among his works, the novel A Yellow Raft in Blue Water (1987) and the memoir The Broken Cord (1989) stand out.
The Broken Cord, which won the 1989 National Book Critics Circle Award for General Nonfiction, dealt with his adopted son's struggle with fetal alcohol syndrome. This work played a significant role in prompting Congress to pass legislation warning of the dangers of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
Dorris was married to author Louise Erdrich, with whom he had six children. They often collaborated on writing projects. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1997 amidst allegations of sexual abuse made against him.
