Mariko Tamaki is a Canadian artist and writer, renowned for her work in graphic novels and prose. She was born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1975 and is of Japanese and Jewish descent. Tamaki is celebrated for her graphic novels such as Skim, Emiko Superstar, and This One Summer, the latter being honored as a runner-up for the Michael L. Printz Award on two occasions.
In 2016, Tamaki expanded her repertoire by writing for major comic book publishers, Marvel and DC Comics. Her career also encompasses roles as a writer, playwright, activist, and performer. She has collaborated with fat activist groups like Pretty Porky and Pissed Off and the theatre troupe TOA. Her works have been showcased across Canada and the United States, including appearances at the Calgary Folkfest and the Vancouver Writer's Festival.
Mariko Tamaki graduated in 1994 with a degree in English Literature from McGill University, after attending Havergal College, an all-girls high school.
