Lois Jane Ehlert was an American author and illustrator renowned for her children's books, most of which explore the theme of nature. Born on November 9, 1934, she spent her life creating numerous inventive and celebrated works.

Her book Color Zoo received the prestigious Caldecott Honor in 1990. Some of her other popular books include Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Cuckoo/Cucú: A Mexican Folktale/Un cuento folklórico Mexicano, and Leaf Man. Ehlert resided in Milwaukee, Wisconsin until her passing on May 25, 2021.
