Joy Angela DeGruy is an American author, academic, and researcher. She has previously served as an assistant professor at the Portland State University School of Social Work. Currently, she is the president and CEO of DeGruy Publications, Inc and the Executive Director of the non-profit Be The Healing, Inc.
She is best known for her influential book Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, originally published by UpTone Press in 2005 and later revised and republished in 2017 by Joy DeGruy Publications, Inc.
DeGruy's research projects have been featured in news and activist coverage of contemporary African-American social issues. She is also an active public speaker, having delivered lectures and workshops on numerous U.S. college campuses, including Morehouse School of Medicine, Fisk University, Spelman College, Harvard University, Yale University, Princeton University, Smith College, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Dr. DeGruy has spoken at prestigious platforms such as the United Nations, UNESCO, C-SPAN, Oxford University, and many more. Her work has been recognized in Essence Magazine and films like "Cracking the Codes" by Shakti Butler and "InVisible Portraits" by Oge Egbuonu on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
In 2021, Dr. DeGruy was awarded a grant from the MacArthur Foundation to further her healing work.
