John Scot Barrowman MBE is a Scottish-American actor, author, presenter, singer, and comic book writer. He is widely recognized for his role as Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and its spin-off Torchwood, as well as Malcolm Merlyn in the Arrowverse.
Born in Glasgow, he moved to Illinois, USA, at the age of eight. Encouraged by his teachers, he studied performing arts in San Diego and soon landed a role in London's West End. Some of his notable theatre roles include performances in Miss Saigon, The Phantom of the Opera, and Sunset Boulevard.
Barrowman has had a diverse career in television and film, appearing in American television dramas and British shows. He has also been a judge on musical talent shows and has hosted quiz shows like Pressure Pad. His contributions to music include albums that have charted in the UK.
As an author, he has published memoirs and young-adult fantasy novels, often collaborating with his sister, Carole.
