James Christopher Frey, born on September 12, 1969, is a notable American writer and businessman, known for his controversial memoirs and significant contributions to young adult fiction. Frey's journey into the literary world began with his debut memoir, A Million Little Pieces (2003), which quickly became a bestseller. The book, along with its sequel, My Friend Leonard (2005), was marketed as a true story of Frey's struggle with addiction and his path to recovery. However, it was later revealed that significant parts of these memoirs were exaggerated or fabricated, leading to a prominent media scandal.
Frey's venture into fiction brought further success with the publication of Bright Shiny Morning (2008), another bestseller. Beyond his individual works, Frey made a noteworthy entrance into the realm of young adult literature with the creation of The Lorien Legacies series. As the founder and CEO of Full Fathom Five, a transmedia production company, he played a pivotal role in producing this acclaimed adventure/science fiction series. Under the collective pen name Pittacus Lore, Frey and his team penned the series, starting with I Am Number Four (2010), which was adapted into a feature film by DreamWorks Pictures.
Alongside his literary career, Frey is the CEO of NYXL, an esports organization based in New York. Residing in New York with his wife, daughter, and dog, Frey continues to write and expand his creative endeavors.
