Henning Georg Mankell was a renowned Swedish crime writer, children's author, and dramatist, best known for his mystery novels featuring his most famous creation, Inspector Kurt Wallander. Besides novels, he also crafted numerous plays and screenplays for television.
As a left-wing social critic and activist, Mankell's work often highlighted social inequality and injustices both in Sweden and internationally. In 2010, he gained attention aboard the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, where Israeli commandos intervened, resulting in the loss of lives.
Mankell spent his time splitting between Sweden and various African countries, particularly Mozambique, where he established a theatre company. His philanthropy was notable, with significant donations to African-focused charities.
