McCaughrean's talent has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Carnegie Medal twice and the Michael L. Printz Award, among others. Beyond novels, her repertoire includes plays for radio and more than sixty other plays, reflecting her love for drama.

In her early life, Geraldine was inspired by her older brother Neil, who published a book when she was young, sparking her ambition. Despite her shyness, she found solace in her imagination and storytelling. Geraldine's journey to becoming a published author involved various jobs, including secretary, teacher, journalist, and sub-editor, before she started writing full-time. Her passion for writing is evident as she describes earning a living from what she loves as 'having so much fun'.

She continues to engage with young readers, often visiting schools to discuss writing and to play story-making games. Geraldine lives with her husband John, and her grown-up actress daughter, Ailsa. Her beloved Golden Retriever, Daisy, who used to accompany her, now lives on in her stories.
