Don Freeman

Don Freeman was a multi-talented American painter, printmaker, cartoonist, and a renowned illustrator and writer of children's books. He was born on August 11, 1908 in San Diego, California and passed away on January 1, 1978.

Freeman was actively creating art from the 1930s through the 1970s, often using Times Square as a backdrop for his memorable works. His subjects frequently included Broadway theatre, politics, and the circus. In addition to his visual artistry, he was a jazz musician and the brother of circus entrepreneur Randy Freeman.

He moved to New York City to study etching with John Sloan and became well-known for his engaging children's books, capturing the imaginations of many young readers.
