Christina Stead

Christina Stead (17 July 1902 โ€“ 31 March 1983) was an Australian novelist and short-story writer acclaimed for her satirical wit and penetrating psychological characterisations. Stead spent most of her writing life in Europe and the United States, which served as the settings for many of her novels.

She is best known for The Man Who Loved Children (1940), praised by author Jonathan Franzen as a "crazy, gorgeous family novel" and "one of the great literary achievements of the twentieth century." Despite her extensive time abroad, she returned to Australia before her death.

Christina Stead was a committed Marxist, although she never joined the Communist Party. Her works continue to be celebrated for their depth and insight.
