Catherine Jane Whitney is an American jazz singer, composer, and lyricist born in Chicago, Illinois. She was a lyricist for the renowned trumpeter Freddie Hubbard.
Whitney's exposure to music began in her childhood. Her mother, Dorothy Brady, was a vocalist and bandleader in Chicago during the 1950s and '60s. Her stepfather, George E. Lescher, was a pianist with the Spike Jones Band during World War II and later led the George Lescher Ballroom Orchestra in Chicago.
She embarked on her professional jazz singing career in the early 1990s, mentored by Von Freeman, a famed tenor saxophonist in Chicago. Her work has been recorded by Jerry Brown and Gloria Cooper, and she has collaborated with notable musicians such as Johnny Griffin, Houston Person, Clifford Jordan, Stanley Turrentine, Ray Brown, and Pete Cosey. Additionally, she is a Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) affiliated writer.
Whitney continues to contribute to the jazz music scene, working with numerous musicians and leaving a significant mark with her lyrical and vocal prowess.
