Bill Martin Jr.

William Ivan Martin Jr. was an American educator, publishing executive, and a prolific author of children's literature. Born on March 20, 1916, he dedicated his life to education and writing, crafting more than 300 children's books. His most famous works include Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, and its sequels, all in collaboration with illustrator Eric Carle.


Martin's journey began as an elementary school principal and teacher, roles in which his passion for children's education flourished. He held a doctoral degree in early childhood education, which he utilized in his work as a publishing executive in New York City, designing innovative reading programs for schools.


After several successful years in publishing, Martin turned to writing full-time, continuing to captivate young minds with his creative storytelling. In 1996, the state of Kansas established the Bill Martin Jr. Award to honor the best children's picture book, a testament to his influence and legacy in children's literature.
