Amanda MacKinnon Palmer, also known as Amanda Fucking Palmer, is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and performance artist. She first garnered attention as the lead vocalist, pianist, and lyricist of the duo The Dresden Dolls, acclaimed for their unique blend of punk and cabaret styles, described as "Cabaret Punk Brechtiano". Her artistic journey continued as a solo artist, with her debut solo album Who Killed Amanda Palmer, produced by Ben Folds, released in 2008.
Palmer is also known for her work in the duo Evelyn Evelyn and as the lead singer and songwriter of Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra. Her solo career has been marked by brave and boundless endeavors, including the crowd-funded album Theatre Is Evil, which debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 in 2012 and holds the record for the top-funded original music project on Kickstarter.
In addition to her musical pursuits, Palmer delivered the presentation "The Art of Asking" at the TED conference in 2013, which has since been viewed over 20 million times. She further developed her ideas into a New York Times best-selling memoir with the same title. Since 2015, she has engaged with her audience through the patronage platform Patreon, fostering a unique model of micro-support for her artwork.
Her 2019 release, There Will Be No Intermission, produced by John Congleton, was accompanied by a 14-month international tour. Both the album and tour addressed complex themes such as life, death, abortion, and miscarriage. Originally from New York, Palmer has been living and working in Aotearoa New Zealand since March 2020. She has one child with author Neil Gaiman.
