Timothy Thomas Powers is an American science fiction and fantasy author, born on February 29, 1952, in Buffalo, New York. He is renowned for his works that integrate historical events with supernatural elements. He grew up in California after his family moved there in 1959.
Powers is celebrated for his novel The Anubis Gates (1983), which earned him the Philip K. Dick Award and international recognition. Other notable works include Declare, Last Call, and On Stranger Tides, which inspired the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film and the Monkey Island video games.
He studied English Literature at Cal State Fullerton, where he met lifelong friends and collaborators James Blaylock and K.W. Jeter. Together, they were part of the California group of writers close to Philip K. Dick. Interestingly, Dick once wrote a page of Powers' manuscript for The Anubis Gates.
Tim Powers has won numerous awards, including the World Fantasy Award and Locus Awards, and is known for his "secret histories" that reveal hidden supernatural influences on historical figures. He lives in Muscoy, California, and teaches part-time as a writer-in-residence at the Orange County High School of the Arts.
