Tarō Gomi (五味 太郎, Gomi Taro), born on August 20, 1945, in Chofu, Tokyo, is a prominent Japanese children's book writer and illustrator. He is renowned as one of Japan's most prolific creators in the genre. Gomi graduated from the Kuwazawa Design Institute and published his first children's picture book in 1973.
With more than 400 books to his name, his works have been widely translated into other languages, including prominent titles in English such as Everyone Poops, Santa Through the Window, Where's the Fish?, and The Crocodile and the Dentist. In addition to writing, he has composed songs for children's shows, including the well-known DanDanDanDan (だんだんだんだん) in 1987.
Gomi's contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Mildred L. Batchelder Award in 2017 for his book Over The Ocean. He has also been honored with the Sankei Jido Shuppan Bunka Award and the Bologna Children's Book Fair Award.
In addition to books, Gomi is active in stationery design, clothing design, and the production of young children's animated videos and CD-ROMs. His work appeals to a wide audience, ranging from babies to adults, with dedicated fans both in Japan and internationally.
