Taiyo Matsumoto (Japanese: 松本 大洋, Hepburn: Matsumoto Taiyō) is a renowned Japanese manga artist born on October 25, 1967. He has been an active professional manga artist since the 1980s and is celebrated for his experimental style and genre-blending works such as Tekkonkinkreet, Ping Pong, and No. 5. Influenced by Katsuhiro Otomo and French bande dessinée, Matsumoto's art is known for combining psychological depth with rough, expressive lines.
Matsumoto has garnered multiple awards, including the Eisner Award and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. Though he initially desired a career as a professional soccer player, he eventually chose an artistic profession. His first success came through the Comic Open contest, enabling him to make his professional debut. He began his career with 'Straight', a comic about basketball players, and continued to explore sports themes with 'Zéro', a story about a boxer.
In 1993, Matsumoto commenced the 'Tekkonkinkreet' trilogy in Big Spirits magazine, which was later adapted into a theatre play. He has also contributed several short stories to the Comic Aré magazine, collected in 'Nihon no Kyodai'.
