Susin Nielsen is a Canadian author known for her work in children's, adolescent, and young adult literature. She began her career in television, where she initially worked on the popular series Degrassi Junior High, providing food for the cast and crew before her writing talent was recognized. Nielsen wrote sixteen episodes for the show and went on to write for over twenty Canadian TV series.
Her first young adult novel, Word Nerd, published in 2008, received critical acclaim and won multiple Young Readers’ Choice Awards. Her subsequent novels, including Dear George Clooney: Please Marry My Mom, continued her success.
In 2012, her novel The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen was published, winning several prestigious awards such as the Governor General’s Literary Award, the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Award, and the Canadian Library Association’s Children’s Book of the Year Award. The novel addresses the sensitive topic of the aftermath of a school shooting.
In 2019, Nielsen was honored with the Vicky Metcalf Award for Literature for Young People, recognizing her significant contribution to the field.
