Sudha Murty (nรฉe Kulkarni) is an Indian educator, author, and philanthropist. She is the Founder-Chairperson of the non-profit charitable organization Infosys Foundation. Married to N. R. Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, Sudha Murty has made significant contributions to social work and education.
In 2024, she was nominated as a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, on 8 March 2024. Her dedication to social work earned her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, in 2006, and in 2023, she received the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in India.
Sudha Murty began her career in computer science and engineering and is a member of the public health care initiatives of the Gates Foundation. She has founded several orphanages, participated in rural development efforts, supported the movement to provide all Karnataka government schools with computer and library facilities, and established the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University.
Known for her philanthropy and contribution to literature in Kannada and English, her novel Dollar Bahu (lit. 'Dollar Daughter-in-Law'), originally authored in Kannada, was later translated into English and adapted into a televised dramatic series by Zee TV in 2001. Her story Runa (lit. 'Debt') was adapted as a Marathi film, Pitruroon, by director Nitish Bhardwaj, where she also acted in the film as well as in the Kannada film Prarthana.
