Stanley Coren

Stanley Coren is a renowned psychology professor and neuropsychological researcher known for his extensive work on the intelligence, mental abilities, and history of dogs. Born in 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he is a professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia. Coren writes for Psychology Today in the feature series Canine Corner.


He has authored several popular books, including How to Speak Dog (2001), Why We Love the Dogs We Do (2000), The Pawprints of History (2002), and Why Does My Dog Act That Way (2006). Notably, his book The Intelligence of Dogs (1994) explores the three types of intelligence in dogs: instinctive, adaptive, and working/obedience intelligence. His works How Dogs Think and The Modern Dog have been bestsellers, while Born to Bark won the Maxwell Medal of Excellence from the Dog Writers Association of America. He is also a member of the Royal Society of Canada.
