Sophie Aldred is an English actress and television presenter. She has worked extensively in children's television as a presenter and voice artist. She is best known for her portrayal of Ace, the Seventh Doctor's companion, in the television series Doctor Who during the late 1980s, becoming the final companion in the series' first run.
Born in Greenwich, London, Sophie was brought up in Blackheath, South East London. After leaving school, she pursued a degree in drama at Manchester University. She gained her equity card by singing in working men's clubs and began her acting career in the theatre. Her career includes appearing in 'Fiddler on the Roof' with Topol. An audition for a part in Doctor Who led to her iconic role as Ace. Initially, she believed her role would be playing Ray in 'Delta and the Bannermen', but she landed the role of Ace in 'Dragonfire'. She would later discover that Ace would be the new traveling companion for the Doctor, played by Sylvester McCoy. Sophie continued in this role for two further seasons before the show's cancellation.
