Sally Gardner is a British children's literature writer and illustrator. She gained recognition for her novel Maggot Moon, which won both the Costa Book Award for Children's Book and the prestigious Carnegie Medal in 2012.
Gardner grew up and still resides in London. Despite being dyslexic and not learning to read or write until the age of fourteen, she pursued her education passionately. Initially labeled 'unteachable' and sent to a school for maladjusted children, she defied the odds by achieving a degree with highest honors from a leading London art college followed by a scholarship to a theater school. Her career began as a costume designer for notable productions.
After becoming a mother to twin daughters and a son, Gardner shifted focus to writing and illustrating, primarily involving fairytale- or magical-themed subject matter. Under the pseudonym Wray Delaney, she has also ventured into writing adult novels.
The Londonβs Sunday Times has lauded her as 'an idiosyncratic genius'.
