Rodman Philbrick is an American writer of novels for both adults and children. He is widely recognized for his contribution to children's literature with popular books such as Freak the Mighty, Max the Mighty, The Last Book In The Universe, alongside writing mysteries and thrillers for adults.
Born on January 22, 1951, Philbrick grew up on the New England coast, where he was involved in various jobs including working as a longshoreman and boat builder. His early career was marked by writing mysteries and detective novels. The Private Eye Writers of America nominated two of his T.D. Stash series for best detective novel and awarded Brothers & Sinners as Best Novel in 1993. Writing under the pen names William R. Dantz, Chris Jordan, and W.R. Philbrick, he has delved into the near-future worlds of genetic engineering and hi-tech brain control with books like Hunger, Pulse, The Seventh Sleeper, and Nine Levels Down.
His book Freak The Mighty was inspired by the life of a boy who lived a few blocks away from him, and it has been a significant success, receiving critical acclaim and being translated into numerous languages.
