Randa Abdel-Fattah

Randa Abdel-Fattah is an Australian writer of fiction and non-fiction. Born in 1979, she is well-known for her advocacy for Palestinian people and human rights. Much of her work delves into themes of identity and what it means to be Muslim in Australia.

Her debut novel, Does My Head Look Big in This?, was published in 2005. In 2021, she released Coming of Age in the War on Terror.

Randa was born in Sydney and is of Palestinian and Egyptian heritage. She grew up in Melbourne, attending a Catholic primary school and an Islamic secondary college, where she obtained an International Baccalaureate. She studied Arts/Law at Melbourne University and served as the Media Liaison Officer at the Islamic Council of Victoria. In this role, she had the opportunity to write for newspapers and engage with media institutions about their representation of Muslims and Islam.

During her university years and her work at the ICV, Randa was a strong advocate for human rights and even stood in the 1996 federal election as a member of the Unity Party-Say No To Hanson.
