Founded in 1923 in Vienna by Fritz Ungar, Bela Horovitz, and Ludwig Goldscheider, the company was established with the mission of producing high-quality books at affordable prices. Initially, Phaidon published works on literature, art, and history. It wasn't until 1936 that they began releasing large-format art books, showcasing works by artists such as Van Gogh, Botticelli, and the French Impressionists.

Today, Phaidon boasts a diverse collection of over 1,500 titles in print, available in multiple languages and sold in over 100 countries. Since its inception, Phaidon has sold nearly 50 million books worldwide.
