Noah Keefer Strycker, born on February 9, 1986, is an acclaimed American birdwatcher, writer, and photographer based near Eugene, Oregon. In 2015, he set a world record for a worldwide Big Year of birding by observing 6,042 species of birds, more than half of the world's bird species, across 41 countries and all seven continents in one calendar year.
Called a “Travel Pioneer” by the BBC and “Birdman of Razzmatazz” by Newsweek, Noah has made significant contributions to ornithology. He has written several books, including Birding Basics (2022), Backyard Guide to the Birds of North America (2nd ed., 2019), Birds of the Photo Ark (2018), Birding Without Borders (2017), The Thing with Feathers (2014), and Among Penguins (2011).
Aside from writing, Noah serves as the Associate Editor of Birding magazine and is a birding ambassador for Leica Sport Optics. He has also guided expeditions in the polar regions for Quark Expeditions and Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions. As an ornithologist, he has traveled to Earth's polar regions more than 50 times and conducted field research in various locations, including Amazonian Ecuador, Costa Rica, Panama, the Australian Kimberley, and the Farallon Islands.
Noah graduated summa cum laude with a master's degree in Marine Sciences from Stony Brook University in 2021. His master's thesis, which won the MSRC Endowment Award for Best Thesis, evaluated the global population of Chinstrap Penguins. He also holds a bachelor's degree in Fisheries and Wildlife from Oregon State University, where he was honored with the Don and Shirley Wirth Young Alumni Award in 2018.
He was the American Birding Association's “Young Birder of the Year” in 2004 and has also pursued competitive tennis, captaining the Oregon State team at #1 singles. In 2011, he completed a hike of the entire 2,665-mile Pacific Crest Trail.
