Mira Grant, also known as Seanan McGuire and A. Deborah Baker, is an accomplished American writer born on January 5, 1978, in Martinez, California. She is best recognized for her urban fantasy novels under her real name and for her science fiction/horror works under the pseudonym Mira Grant. Her writing portfolio is enriched by the "Up-and-Under" children's portal fantasy series, penned under another pseudonym, A. Deborah Baker.
In 2010, she received the prestigious John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer by the World Science Fiction Convention. Adding to her accolades, her 2016 novella Every Heart a Doorway won a Nebula Award, Hugo Award, Locus Award, and Alex Award. In 2013, she achieved a remarkable feat by receiving a record five Hugo nominations, two of which were for works as Mira Grant and three under her own name.
Born and raised in Northern California, Grant has a deep-rooted interest in horror movies, viruses, and zombie apocalypses. She once jokingly claimed to have been voted "Most Likely to Summon Something Horrible in the Cornfield" in college, and was a founding member of the Horror Movie Sleep-Away Survival Camp. Currently, she resides in a rustic farmhouse surrounded by cats, horror movies, comics, and books about dreadful diseases. Her lifestyle vividly reflects her writing interests, which often explore themes of horror and science fiction.
As Seanan McGuire, she has been honored with the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. Her works, both as Mira and Seanan, are listed on her main bibliography page. Notably, all three Newsflesh novels and the novella Countdown in the Newsflesh universe, along with Parasite from the Parasitology series, have been nominated for Hugo Awards.
